Each year the adult advisors of Troop 57 go on a retreat. It's an adults only campout that allows the leaders to get away from it all for a weekend of fun, relaxation, stress-relief, and also to consider ideas to help 57 continue to thrive. This year we headed down to Brownwood, Texas at the invitaion of former Scoutmaster Tom Oliver to be guests on his deer lease. We had a rare event at this retreat, not only was the current Scoutmaster there but so were 3 former Troop 57 Scoutmasters: Lloyd Roland, Kevin Harrison, and Tom Oliver.
We left FUMC Friday evening, stopped for dinner along the way, and arrived at the lease late Friday night. It was nice having a heated bunkhouse to sleep in instead of tents as the weather Friday night dipped down into the freezing realm. After a hearty breakfast the next morning, we headed out to do a little shooting. We spent the day turning clay targets into clay dust at the shotgun range and perforating plastic jugs, drink cans, bottles, and paper targets at the rifle/pistol range. As a way of showing our gratitude we helped out on the lease with a little service project. There was a drainage problem just past the camp site that needed attention. We moved rocks, cleared drainage pipes, and helped dig a trench to divert the water runoff away from camp back down into the drainage ditch where it belonged. It was a great weekend to relax, have a little fun, do a little troop planning, and share a little fellowship.
