Each summer Troop 57 schedules a high adventure activity along with our traditional summer camp. this year however we had a rare opportunity. We have two high adventure activities fo the summer instead of one. We are sending two crews to two-week treks at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and one crew to a one-week trek at Camp Frank Rand in the Pecos Wilderness in Chimayo, New Mexico. In order to prepare our crews for their backpacking adventures we scheduled a series of "shake-down" hikes with full packs. These serve to get the trekkers in shape for the long hikes as well as test their equipment, packing and preparedness skills. We decided to turn our June campout into one of these shake-down hikes. We chose Lake Mineral Wells State park because of it's excellent camping facilities and the fact that it contains one of the four Trail-Heads to the 20 mile long Lake Mineral Wells State Trailway, an excellent hiking trail. As it turns out not only did the hike test our strength, stamina & packing skills, our "weather preparedness" was put to the test as well (once again Troop 57's unofficial slogan has been proven true: If it's raining, 57 must be in the field).
